Come join me in beautiful Delray Beach – the most fun small city in America (US News and World Report).
We will focus on the impressionist principles of painting in a modern, personalized form, using emotional responses to subject matter.
You will learn how to use a limited, effective palette; hard and soft edges; and broad brushstrokes to convey your impression of a chosen subject matter.
We will be painting outside as well as inside the studio, so you should bring portable easels along with your supplies. . We will study what makes this area unique: water, palm trees and historical cottages
Some outdoor easels will be be available on a first come/first served basis. A materials list will be given upon enrollment.
All mediums are welcome
Lodging: if you are not a local, there are a couple of nice hotels within walking distance to both my studio and the beach: Delray’s Hyatt Place, Crane’s Beach House, The Colony Hotel…and many more.
Full cost for the two days is $260. This includes a light lunch both days and coffee, tea, water, and if you are good :-)), some wine at the end of the day!

Day one
The class will start with what it takes to make a painting from life – hopefully en Plein Air, using the techniques of the French Impressionists. Important points to be covered… composition, color palette, hard and soft edges and brushstrokes.
I will talk about the materials the class is going to use and why.
Special emphasis will be given on the importance of editing vast amounts of information and how to tap into an emotional response to visual stimuli.
I will demonstrate by starting a Plein Air painting and talk about under painting, and the importance of shadows/light.
Students will start their sketches and/or paintings outdoors.
After lunch, students will have the option of continuing their painting outdoors, or coming inside to work. Students may also want to start a new painting from their own reference materials (or I will provide) and contrast the experience of srudio versus Plein Air work.
Day two
Students will meet in a new location to begin a Plein Air painting.
Students will work on their paintings. I will be meeting with each student individually to answer questions and help you solve painting issues.
After lunch, students will meet at the studio and work on finishing touches. The last part of the class will be a critique of the work produced in the last two days, both individually and as a group.
A light lunch will be provided both days, and we will celebrate the end of each session with a glass of wine or beer, in the traditional Impressionist way!
